Kanuka
Makara Peak Tree of the Week - the Koru Kanuka.
With a girth of 2.6m and a height of 15m, we think this is the largest kanuka in the park. There are many around 5-10m tall over by the new Supa Kanuka track. Like manuka, they're a species susceptible to Myrtle Rust.
One way to make a forest more resilient in the face of diseases like Myrtle Rust is to ensure it's full of a wide variety of healthy trees. That's where tree planting and possum control come in.
Kamahi
Kamahi is one of those species that possums love to browse, so while it can be quite common in healthy virgin forests, there are only a few big ones left at Makara Peak. This one, not far from the first Koru switchback, has a girth of 2.3m and is about 15m tall. 'A5' is a trap label.
